North-Western European Price Coupling (NWE)
Nord Pool was heavily involved in the important North-Western European Price Coupling (NWE) project alongside all the TSOs and power exchanges across the region.
In a landmark move for the future of Europe’s power markets, Nord Pool together with three other Power Exchanges and 13 Transmission System Operators (TSOs) successfully launched the North-Western Europe (NWE) day-ahead price coupling project on 4 February 2014.
For the first time, the NWE region, stretching from France to Finland, operates under a common day-ahead power price calculation using the Price Coupling of Regions (PCR) solution. Nord Pool has been heavily involved in both projects.
This NWE project pioneered the pan-European Price Coupling of day-ahead power markets. NWE coupled the day-ahead markets across Central Western Europe (CWE), Great Britain, the Nordic countries, the Baltic countries, and the SwePol link between Sweden and Poland. All interconnectors within and between the following NWE countries will now be optimally utilized: Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany/Austria, Great Britain, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland (via the SwePol Link), and Sweden.
