No.03/2007 Increase in market shares and transactions on Nord Pool
(Lysaker, 10 January 2007) The Nord Pool group experienced an increase in market share in the physical market and in the total number of transactions for electricity contracts compared to 2005.
In the physical electricity markets, organised by Nord Pool Spot AS, the company has increased the market share to 63.3 per cent compared to 45 per cent in 2005. The total volumes traded were 249.8 TWh compared to 176 TWh in 2005.
The number of electricity contracts traded and cleared through Nord Pool ASA increased from 124,331 in 2005 to 141,005 in 2006. The total volume cleared by Nord Pool Clearing ASA reached 2,160 TWh compared to 2,156 TWh the year before.
Transaction volumes on Nord Pool Spot’s markets were 249.8 TWh in 2006 compared to 176 TWh in 2005. The figures include the Elbas volume (balancing market for Finland, Sweden, Eastern Denmark and Germany) of 1.1 TWh. The average system price for 2006 was EUR 48.59/MWh as compared to EUR 29.33/MWh in 2005. The value of turnover in the physical market for 2006 was EUR 12.2 billion as compared to EUR 5.1 billion in 2005.
The number of participants at Nord Pool Spot AS increased by 25 to 294 in 2006.
In the financial market, the number of transactions increased by approximately 13.4 per cent in 2006 compared to the year before (traded and cleared). The value of turnover on the exchange was EUR 79.2 billion in 2006 as compared to EUR 52.3 billion in 2005.
The volume of financial contracts traded through Nord Pool in 2006 was 766 TWh compared to 786 TWh in 2005.
The decrease from last year is due to the increase in power prices that led to several, but smaller contracts. The market share of trades at Nord Pool’s financial market was 35.5 per cent in 2006, down 2.7 percentage points from 2005.
The total volume of traded and cleared EU Allowances (1 tonne CO2=1 EUA) was 59.57 million tonnes compared to 27.96 million tonnes in 2005.
The financial market gained 16 new members and the EUA market 18 new members in 2006.
